In the human world, the variation of life styles usually comes with the accumulation of different bodily experiences. In order to arrange such a massive society, it is essential for the governing authorities to create a restricted condition for body movements and gestures. Discipline, for example, organizes the relationship between movement and the environment. It not only guarantees the obedience of individuals, but also create a better efficiency of time and gesture…it is a power that regards individuals both as objects and as instruments of its exercise. (Foucault, 1975, p.148). Similarly, in the interest of time and space, it is also necessary to formulate an efficient and productive strategy in the process of artwork creation.
Discipline for behavior usually challenges the unique identity of human beings. Also, for the unique creativity of art, the impact of restricted condition may not be so positive. However, if I exercise tighter control over the procedure, the vision of “setting the restricted condition” in making art may be totally transformed. In other words, formulating an extraordinary rule itself can be a possible source of creativity. Even the way of using a simple tool, such as shovel, can also be linked to the user’s personal experience. No matter how strict the discipline is, the process of execution will be slightly changed by different people.
Indeed, through the setting of simple rule and constraints, the effect of work might be more closely related to the objective, neutral field of human nature (Morgan, 2002). However, a potential style or visual effect may be revealed during the restraint process of making a work. Put simply, the creation of a simple order or equipment can be used to empower the movements of body with a pure intention, just like the rules of gesture and the tools of restriction in my works. On the other hand, bodily experience, which confronts the setting of restricted conditions, may tell a different story through the interaction with material and space.
