Veronica Shimanovskaya is a St. Petersburg born American artist currently residing in London where she is studying on the Professional Doctorate in Fine Art programme. She has been a scholar in art, architecture and theatre and has her MA degrees from the University of East London, University of Architecture and Civil Engineering and Harvard University respectively.
The main preoccupation of Veronica’s practice-based Doctorate is contextualizing her philosophical groundings while exploring the methods and means of her art practice. As she is interested in pure subjectivity, and searching for the almost “pre-conscious” innocence and transformation, she is finding herself emerging more and more into the world of play as a method of art-production that yields the artifacts representative of the fictional, or fictionalized reality. Finding her philosophical inspiration in the concept of cognitive closure, (Negel, McGinn) she moves through Merleau-Ponty’s Phenomenology of Perception to the literary criticism of Mikhail Bakhtin and Umberto Eco. The research by art production manifests itself in the variety of media ranging from painting to multimedia installation.
Veronica refers to her practice as a diary of moments and her communication with the world and herself as a part of it. She explores the realm of imaginary and reflective. In the process of her analysing the reflective, she follows the flow of moments and expressions the form that she creates and keeps her practice open to serendipity. She explores a fragile balance between the past and present, the internal and the external, the glanced over and contemplated.
