Yaroslaff Soltan
Artist Statement 2017
Currently, the focus of my research is the phenomena of Alchemy and inner transformation through art practice.
I am interested in the similarity between alchemical and fine art practices.
I hope that by creating works of art, I can experience inner transformation, as it happened to alchemists.
My main point of interest is not physical but psychological Alchemy, as understood by Carl Gustav Jung. Therefore I concentrate on my internal images which I gain through dreams, visions, feelings, memories. Those internal images form the substance of my art.
Because of the similarity between psychotherapy and Alchemy in Jungian psychology, Alchemy is often seen as the anatomy of personality transformation.
Therefore I look for answers to the following questions:
Can Alchemy be anatomy of fine art practice too?
Can the physical process of art-making cause inner change in the artist?
The very first step of each alchemist was to choose his Prima Materia (prime matter) for further experimentation.
In Jungian interpretation of Alchemy, Prima Materia is our most fundamental complex or unconscious emotional burden. The work in this exhibition represents the search for my Prima Materia.
In all there are seven stages of alchemical work. My research will continue through these stages.
